Portrait of Illustrator Axel Pfaender

Hi, my name is Axel, illustrator and designer.

I create illustrations for brands and publishing, from large murals to infographics.

My thing: transforming complex topics into vibrant and fun illustrations.

My style: Clear lines, bold colors, and eye-catching forms. My aim ist to communicate with humor and playfulness, and I always try to sneak in some whimsical details.

What about AI? I don't use AI tools for my artwork. My illustrations are highly customized and executed with great dedication to detail.

What else? When I am not creating illustrations for magazines, organizations and brands, I am teaching design at the International University. My homebase is in Stuttgart, in the south of Germany.

Editorial Illustration

Whether it's illustrations for magazines or corporate publishing: My art isn't just decorative, it adds new perspectives to the text. Ideally, illustration and text form a dynamic symbiosis.

Technology & Science:

A lot of my work deals with technology, science, medicine, and business. I enjoy turning these technical and dry topics into engaging visual stories. It's my mission to make complex content accessible and entertaining.

Some great examples are my artworks for Volkswagen Stiftung and Haufe Immobilienwirtschaft

My Human-Powered Process (No AI)

The creation of illustrations includes lots of research, reflection, conversations, testing, scribbling, discussing, drawing, refining, perfecting details.

Sometimes ideas come easy, sometimes they leave me hanging. Sometimes a new idea pops up when I least expect it.

Communication with my clients is essential: we discuss ideas on the phone, by email or on video-calls. But always from human to human.

That's the human powered process.

Clients:

I work for international clients and magazines like Bosch, Deutsche Bahn, Würth, Stihl, Smart, Monocle, Dwell Magazine, The Atlantic, Google, Haufe Group, Deutsche Telekom, TÜV Süd, Allianz, Zeit Magazin.

Typical Project Steps

How do I get from a client brief to a finished illustration?

1. Research:  I start by digging into the client's brief and thoroughly exploring the topic.

2. Discuss: First ideas and concepts emerge, which I discuss with the client.

3. Sketch: Next up are rough concept sketches – sometimes in a sketchbook, sometimes digitally on the tablet.

4. Visual Style: Depending on the project, I may supplement the sketches with a „look & feel“ presentation.

5. Create & Refine: Based on the approved sketches I create digital illustrations in Adobe Illustrator. The client receives frequent updates an gives me feedback.

6. Finalize: I clean up vectors, double-check colors and finalize the artwork down to the last detail. This ensures perfect production across all media.
